Students in my Visual Arts class completed a recycled art project using old crayons to make a mosaic design of their choice. Check out the results! Click on the images below to enlarge.
My Visual Arts class recently completed a new project that I am calling the Daylight/Black Light project. This idea came to me while watching an episode of Project Runway. Project Runway is a fashion design reality TV competition. In the episode designers are asked to design an outfit that can from day to night by transforming under a black light. A clip of the final runway can be viewed below. Just like the fashion designers, I challenged my Seniors to create a work of art that gains interest when shown under a black light using neon or fluorescent materials. To make the project significant, their subject or concept had to be inspired or based on artist that currently has work in the Art Institute of Chicago.
(Seniors will tour the art institute on their upcoming Senior Trip in May) I was lucky enough to be able to attend an annual event called the Marine Educators Workshop during the first week of March in San Diego, California. The workshop can be explained as a week-long event providing a glimpse into what it takes to become a U.S. Marine, what obstacles recruits may face when choosing to the join the armed services, education benefits and job opportunities available within the Corps. Attendees also are able to speak face to face with recruits, drill instructors, and a panel of active duty Marines. Each day focuses on different aspects of the Corps and includes highlights such as: - Education center tours - Q & A with Marines at various ranks and multiple career fields - Boarding a military aircraft - Marksmanship training - Eating lunch with recruits - Team building events - Participation in an optional Marine Corps fitness test The link below shows the Google Slide Presentation I used to show my classes a brief outline of my week. In addition, linked below are videos created by the media staff who also attended the week. Click on the images below to enlarge. The links below are a video series made by Brian Will, a reporter from NewsChannel 7 in Wausau, Wisconsin who attended the workshop right along with the 30 educators in our group.
Seniors in my Visual Arts class created the paintings below using an acrylic pouring method. I LOVE the results and my students had a lot of fun designing them! These paintings were completed using canvas panels, Elmer's glue, water, craft acrylic paint and many plastic cups! If you would like to try this method, there are ENDLESS amount of ideas and resources online - especially on YouTube and art educator websites! Click on the images below to enlarge. I introduced my class to artists from history with a similar aesthetic, like Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell. Seniors will be able to view art from these artists on their Senior Trip in May when they tour the Art Institute of Chicago (shown above). Seniors are also getting into the routine of adding projects to their digital portfolio, which will be used as a way to catalog their work through the semester. Digital portfolios can seen HERE.
My new classes for this semester are as follows: 3rd Hour - Art 8 4th Hour - Visual Arts (Seniors) 5th Hour - Drawing & Painting 6th Hour - Art 6 All classes started the semester by creating digital portfolios, sketchbooks, and portfolios to hold work through the course of the class. After that, all classes completed a color theory review. Once the color wheel was reviewed, classes were assigned their first projects.
