My Mixed Media class completed a Japanese Notan project. Notan is a Japanese word meaning the balance between dark and light. The art is created through a paper-cutting process, and is a prime example of positive and negative space.
Prior to working solo, students worked in a groups to practice the paper cutting process. Each small group of 4 students had 10 minutes to create a Notan. The results were then photographed and voted on by my two Intro to Art classes. The winning design was #5 pictured below.
After practicing, students created their individual projects. The colorful background was made by completing a saran wrap watercolor painting technique. After the background dried overnight, a Notan was created with black construction paper.
The final results! :) I love the colors and the creativity!
Mixed Media students (Juniors) also completed a name design project for their first assignment. Check back for more updates through the Trimester!
My lovely Mixed Media class completed their first project - Japanese Notans. This concept is all about positive/negative space, and balance. The background was painted with watercolor, and black construction paper was cut to create the designs in the foreground. Click on the images below to enlarge.
