Week 2 flew by! Our new semester schedule featuring a 6 hour day makes it seem like each day moves very quickly. I was nervous about 60 minute classes (compared to having 70+ minute classes for the last 5 years), but now I love them! I find my classes to use their time well, and I like the fast-paced environment. It's been a busy week, but I am happy with how everything has been going. Here is a little summary of what we've been up to! All of my classes 7th-12th grade are creating digital portfolios this year using Google Slides. Examples of their title pages can be seen below. Each time a student finishes a project, they will be posting a photo of it to their portfolio, and writing a corresponding artist statement. Art 7 is finishing up School Spirit Posters in small groups. Their designs must show all 6 Elements of Art in the final product. Most groups will finish on Monday, and we will have a group critique to follow. You can see progress on their work by clicking on the images below. Art 8 is finishing up Camouflage Paintings in small groups showing all the Elements of Art, as well as 2 Principles of Art (Emphasis and Pattern). This project was inspired by Guido Daniele, an artist famous for hand painting. The challenge was to incorporate 2 hidden hands in their final piece. Two groups have finished, and their images are pictured below (click to enlarge). My Drawing/Painting class is finishing up one of my favorite projects - Geometric Silhouettes. After reviewing color theory, they jumped right in to this project and blew me away. Some students finished on Friday, but most will finish Monday or Tuesday of this week. I cannot wait to post the results! Last, but not least, my Intro to Art class is working on Mixed Media Self-Portraits. this project combines portrait drawing, magazine collage as a color theory review, and a little free choice typography addition. More pictures to come soon! This week also included the start of Homecoming preparation. Class meetings were held on Friday to vote for Homecoming court and to sign up for Powder Puff Games Sign-ups are posted in the cafeteria! Homecoming week will start on Monday, October 2nd, with the game the following Friday (6th) and the dance on Saturday (7th). The Powder Puff Football game will take place on Friday afternoon for the girls. The NHS-sponsored Powder Puff Volleyball game will take on Wednesday afternoon for the boys. There will also be a Lightning Basketball Challenge in between the Powder Puff Volleyball games. A National Honor Society update can be found HERE. Thanks for viewing my website! Please check back for more updates soon!
I finally have a chance to make a post to update what we have been up to in the Art room! A new Trimester started recently, and we're underway with new projects and new students. My 3 new classes are 1. Drawing & Painting 2. Art History 3. Art 8 along with my usual elementary hour in the afternoon of course. Here is what we've been doing: Drawing/Painting reviewed the color wheel, and completed a Geometric Silhouette project that was a new one for me. After deciding what to use as their silhouette (animal, etc) they created an outline using mainly straight lines. After that, lines were drawn INSIDE the object and filled in using a specific color scheme that was reviewed (complementary, analgous, etc). After painting that, the background had to completed as well, but in a contrasting way. The results are great! I've received many compliments on them! Click on the images below to enlarge. Drawing/Painting students are now working on an Agamograph project - results will be posted soon! My Art History class is a nice small group that is really great to work with. We started our learning with Pre-Historic art including Cave Paintings of Lascaux, Stonehenge, Egyptian Art, and most recently, Greek & Roman Art. They completed cave paintings in small groups, along with a simple Egyptian Profile. Up next are Greek Vases, and a test over our first unit! My final class at the Junior/High School is Art 8. They began the Trimester with a color theory challenge, creating the color wheels below from prior knowledge. After working in a small group, they were assigned a "creative color wheel" project to take a new spin on the traditional circular format. Click on the image to enlarge. Up next, they are reviewing the Elements of Art by creating Camouflage Paintings that display all of the elements using a winter/holiday theme. Camouflage paintings are inspired by artist Guido Daniele, who is famous for body painting, and specifically realistic hand paintings. When their paintings are completed, they must hide two painted hands in a photograph taken by their group. See examples from last year HERE. Pictured below is one example (can you find the hands?) and the current works in progress. Only one more week to go until Winter Break! Happy Holidays to all!
