Today, in the last "regular" day of 1st Trimester, we went through student portfolios.
In each class, students were asked to pick their favorite art work from the Trimester,
and I photographed it for this slideshow. Enjoy!
3rd Hour helped me to decorate the Art Room for the holiday season!
I found these dot paintings when I was organizing my pictures to back up before next Trimester! The dot paintings were created by high schoolers, based on Aboriginal art of Australia. :)
Students in all classes completed a stencil project. Stencils were created with poster board and scissors. The stencil was then set on the t-shirt (or paper for those who chose not to bring a T-shirt) and spray paint was used to add color. I love the results!!
This is our last week in class. :( Next week starts a new Trimester. We finished up last projects, last sketchbook assignment, and portfolios. I am going to miss the students I do not have again next week!!
Our 3rd hour class was assigned to teach a certain grade an art lesson of our choice. We had to pick what we wanted to present and had to be related to a culture. Skye, Lucas and Kelsey taught 2nd grade how to make pilgrims out of paper plates and construction paper. Kennedy, Morgan, Ben, and Josh taught the Kindergarten class how to make penguins out of construction paper . Kasey, Brittany, and Paige taught the 4th graders about dot paintings, and made them do a Christmas or winter theme.
This week in 1st hour we worked on a grid enlargement of two famous paintings, Starry Night and Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh. Each student had their own section of the paintings they had to recreate in their own style. After finishing the Grid Enlargements, we finished up our presenations on Letter Photography. We also made inchies!! Inchies are 2 x 2 inch wooden squares that we put our name on and decorated how we wanted to. Miss Westphal is taking our inchies to cover the top of a table, our art is just that fantastic! :D
This week we finally put together our whole Grid Inlargement of American Gothic (the origanal artist is Grant wood.) Also this week we started to do our Cut-Out Posters project, we did this by looking up a famous peice of artwork and redrawing it on a big sheet of paper. Then we had to cut out the face of the peice of artwork so someone can place your head through the hole. To end our week we had to do an Inchies assignment which are, designing a little peice of wood how ever you would like but it has to have your name on it.
Catfish is a movie we have discussed in the high school art classes. It is the story of a New York resident, Yaniv, and his online facebook relationship with a girl named Megan. The movie teaches a lesson on the importance of online safety, and how comfortable people are with what they openly share online.
The interesting part of it is that some of the film takes place in the UP, specifically Ishpeming.
Some were frustrated with the movie, some questioned its honesty, and others really enjoyed it. Either way, it wasn't forgotten.
Ironically enough, once again, I have found a common day connection to this. MTV has connected with the same filmmakers to create a TV show with the same concept. The show premiered tonight, and it was definitely interesting. Check it out, and see what you think. The ending of the first episode definitely shocked me!
This past weekend, of my favorite shows Saturday Night Live, had a famous painting as the subject of one of their sketches! I thought it was very ironic because we literally learned about American Gothic THIS past week in 2nd hour.
2nd hour students recreated this painting in their Grid Enlargement project (see previous post) originally painted by Grant Wood. The sketch featured Kenan Thompson, Jason Sudeikis, and host Anne Hathaway. The plot of this American Gothic skit was mocking the pose of the two characters in Grant Wood's painting.
I definitely got a good laugh out of it. The sketch is currently on Hulu, and I'm sure will soon be a YouTube video. You can view it by clicking on the screen shot picture above. The original painting by Wood is pictured below.
Below is the Blank Lesson Plan document for use of the Juniors who are completing the Lesson Planning project for the elementary art classes.
The assignment sheet and State Standards are also attached.
