Cleaning up the high school art room this year has really made me appreciate how far it has come since I started in the fall of 2012. These first pictures are what the room look liked the first time I walked in it.
The pictures in the slideshow to follow are what it look liked at the beginning of this school year
(2014-2015)while I was painting and making last minute changes. WOW.
Here is a glimpse at what it looked like in the middle of this school year!
Check out these Triptych projects by my awesome 2nd hour Painting class. The assignment was inspired by the style of famous Pop Artist, Andy Warhol. These projects were created using photos for reference, transparencies, black sharpies, tempera paint, dry media of choice (colored pencil, crayon, etc.), masking tape, hot glue, and some patience. I love the results!
Third trimester is already here! In addition to a Painting class, I am teaching two brand new courses for North Central - Art History and Mixed Media. I am very excited about both of them, and have a lot of creative lessons planned.
This week, my Painting class did an overview of color theory. Their first painting is a classic monochromatic tree project. The final results will be completed at the end of the week.
The Art History class started from the beginning with prehistoric art. They researched some of the first examples of art - Venus of Willendorf, Caves of Lascaux and Stonehenge. Wednesday was spent experimenting with clay and applying concepts they researched. Thursday, we moved to Egyptian Profiles, which are due on Friday.
The Mixed Media class is completing a collage inspired by the artist Michelle Caplan. Items that must be included in the piece are text, painting, newspaper collage and a photo transfer using Mod Podge.
Check back for results to be posted soon!
Here are some current updates for my 3 high school classes.
1st Hour - Intro to Art
Students recently finished up a Mixed Media Self-Portrait Project. After that, they started a group project using the Grid Enlargement process. The final result? A face cut-out poster to be display for interaction at the Spring Art Show. Next week, they will do their first painting assignment!
2nd Hour - Painting
Painting students are currently focusing on Monochromatic color schemes. They practiced one color with various neutrals, like white, black, and grey. The first painting was specific to my assignment, and the second one is more independent. This leaves room for them to paint what they desire.
4th Hour Drawing
The first assignment for the Drawing class was a Unity Ribbons shading exercise using ebony pencils, and oil pastel. Now, they are starting a GIANT grid enlargement of their choice!
Check out some photos below.
Halloween week was a good time to paint some yummy treats! My painting class completed these lovely illustrations. The candy grids were completed by the 1st hour drawing class, and the tree silhouettes by the 4th hour Intro to Art class. Check them out!
First post of the new school year is here! Classes are broken down more specifically this year - much to my delight.
1st Hour Drawing
2nd Hour Painting
3rd Hour Prep
4th Hour Intro to Art
Afternoon - Elementary
The pictures below are from the first week of my Painting class. Their first painting was our "starting point" as they painted a basic black and white still life. I wanted to use this as a reference point as we progress through the class. It will be interesting to look back at the end of the class and see how their skills have improved.
After the still life, students learned about mixing paint. They are now experts on the difference between tint, tone, and shade. (Add white, gray, or black to paint to change its value) We will soon be starting their first big project - a Monochromatic Painting with a trendy twist. I am excited for the results. Until next time, thanks for reading!
Students in 2nd Hour are working on a fun group project - Face Cut Out Posters! Check out what they have started so far...
Intro to Art students (9th and 10th graders) recently completed two different projects: Tint/Shade paintings and Oil Pastel drawings of animals of their choice. Check out the results!
