Sometimes after a long-term project (Self-Portraits), I like to do a one-day lesson for students to be able to take home. I guided the 1st grade class through a directed drawing lesson for adorable bunnies! Click on the images below to see the results. Bunnies from Mrs. Martin's 4th grade class can be seen below. Click the images to enlarge! Even more bunnies completed with the
3rd grade artists can be enlarged below!

All elementary students, Kindergarten through 5th grade, are currently creating self-portraits. This week, students will be finishing them up to be displayed! First up was Mrs. Ekberg's 1st Grade class. Check out the first few to complete the project below. I LOVE the results and cannot wait to display an entire hallway full of student self-portraits. Click to enlarge the completed projects from Mrs. Eichmeier's 3rd grade class below. Click below to enlarge more Self-Portraits from Mrs. Veeser's 3rd grade class! Examples from Mrs. Martin's 4th grade class can be enlarged below! Click on the 2nd Grade projects below to enlarge. 5th Grade worked on their portraits, but still need ONE more day to catch up! Progress can be seen by enlarging the images below.

At the elementary level, I choose art through out the year to be displayed.
The exhibit will be on display from February 28th - March 28th. The gallery hours and address can be seen below. An optional Art Reception will be held on Wednesday, March 13th from 6-7pm EST. Parents and students are encouraged to attend this reception, but may also view the gallery during any open business hours for FREE. (FYI - The reception tends to be a VERY busy event) Awards will be given during this reception. If a student is not present, the ribbons are given to me to pass along to the students. I encourage families to take advantage of seeing your child's art displayed in a professional gallery if you have the chance. Due to an abundance of snow days, one of my two 3rd grade classes is ahead of the other. For this reason, I found this adorable lesson from an amazing fellow art educator @2art.chambers (check out her amazing Instagram) to complete with Mrs. Veeser's class today. Check out the process photos below, and completed projects as well. Click on the images directly below to enlarge. Happy Valentine's Day!Through my years at North Central, I've tried to improve both of my classrooms to make them appealing learning environments for all of my students. Initially, most of my time was spent updating the high school art room because I was there the majority of my day. I've made many changes to that art room - check them out HERE and HERE, too! There is always room for improvement, but overall I am fairly content with the state of that room. My focus lately has been shifted to my elementary room in Hermansville. I have updated it gradually through the years, but not as much as I would like. I still have a lot of ideas of things I'd like to do. My high school room is decorated mainly with COOL colors (blues, greens, and purples, as seen above). My idea is to have my elementary room contain mainly WARM colors in addition to a handful of rainbow items of course. First up, BEFORE photos of the current elementary room: I've wanted to paint the back wall of my classroom ever since I first saw it, but have not found the time to do so. With all of our recent snow days due to the "polar vortex" I've spent many days at home... and after 12 of these said snow days... cabin fever definitely was REAL for me. That being said... I decided this was the time to get this project done! When I went to the store to purchase the three colors I needed, I knew that it was the right time to paint! Conveniently, paint was on clearance and I was able to get all of the paint I needed for $10 total! Can't beat that! This was a great time for me to get this project done, because I had ample time to let the paint dry, and things wouldn't be disrupted at all. You can see from the photo above that snow removal was no joke during our almost two full weeks off from school. My goal for the first day of painting was to get one coat over the entire wall. My progress from this day can be seen below. On day 2 I added a second coat, filled in all of the edging, and did an initial layer on the blended sections. My progress can be seen below. Almost done! At this point, I was exhausted and called it a night on Day 2. One more day of final touches, blending, and clean-up to go! On Day 3, I touched up the edges, finished the blending areas, and decided to make the end portion all red because the fourth color did not cover like I hoped. Final results can be seen below! While paint was drying, I also added some Christmas lights! Before & AfterI can't wait to show my students this week!
Mrs. Veeser's 3rd grade students created the collaborative piece below to spread a little LOVE in the hallway for the month of February. This project was created just for them as part of their reward for winning the art room challenge for the 2nd quarter.
Congratulations to the following classes for
winning the classroom Daily Points competition: 3rd Place - Mrs. Dubord's 2nd Grade 2nd Place - Mrs. Eichmeier's 3rd Grade Overall Winners - Mrs. Veeser's 3rd Grade Mrs. Dubord and Mrs. Eichmeier's class will receive a special surprise during their next class, while Mrs. Veeser's class will earn a whole class period to celebrate their victory with a treat, and special art project! Good luck to all classes next Quarter! 4th Grade students created these one-of-a-kind nutcracker illustrations right before our winter break. We practiced drawing two different nutcrackers - one was fairly basic, and the other more advanced. After some guided drawing instruction, students were able to draw their own design, either like the simpler concept, or the more detailed... or maybe their own combination!
Nutcrackers were finalized with black sharpie, and filled in with either colored pencil or color sticks. Next, the top portion of the background space needed some pizzazz. Students used oil pastels to create a pattern of their choice. The last step was to watercolor paint the remainder of the background - over the oil pastel, and one other separate, contrasting color for the bottom section. Overall, I always love seeing the creativity of students through this project, and I hope everyone else enjoys viewing them as well. Click on the images below to enlarge. Merry Christmas!! It's hard to believe that we're already 1/4 done with this school year and into our 2nd quarter! Here is a little update on what my elementary classes are busy with in the ART ROOM. 5th GradeMr. LaBonte's class finished up their Circle Weaving project from the COLOR THEORY unit. The background of the weavings was created using an analogous color scheme done with tempera paint. Oil pastel designs were added for more detail once the paint was dry. Click on the images below to enlarge. 4th GradeMrs. Martin's class completed a Monochromatic Leaves project in our COLOR THEORY unit. More details on that project can be seen here.
3rd Grade
2nd GradeMrs. Dubord's 2nd grade class completed Paper-Weavings with complementary colors as the main colors. More can be seen on that project here. For ART HISTORY, 2nd graders create a project inspired by the POP art of Andy Warhol. Students will create Pop Art Cupcakes in the 4-section style seen below. 1st GradeMrs. Ekberg's COLOR THEORY project was Silly Pumpkins, completed with secondary colors! These pumpkins were a great practice for mixing colors using primary colors. More on the pumpkins HERE. Kindergarten
