Stained Glass windows are the currents project for 3rd - 6th grade. The examples below are 5th grade. They are required to divide their paper into 5-7 sections, and illustrate each section. Each illustration should be an image that represents their personality, interests, etc. After the drawing are completed in pencil, oil pastel will be used to fill in. The vibrant colors of the windows simulate the beautiful colors used in actual stained glass windows. The last image is our new team labels for table groups. I used artist names to reinforce the importance of art history.

We had our first experience with watercolor paint yesterday with 1st Grade! It went fairly well, even with a Severe Weather Drill. 1st Graders are working on Serapes. Serapes are blankets native to Mexico, and are a great intro project to teach lines to younger art students. Lines that were taught - wavy, zig-zag, straight, looped, broken, dotted, spiral and thick/thin. The lines were drawn with crayon, and our beautiful watercolor paint was added on top of it. This process is called a resist. The results are not quite finished, but I had to post the images taken so far. Up next, we'll add a cut paper fringe to the end to work on our fine motor skills. This weekend, thanks to my family who were visiting, I finally went through all of the art room. Every cabinet, cupboard and cranny was organized, cleaned, and sorted through. I am so excited! I changed around the seating arrangement, and am anxious to keep rolling with projects! We should be finishing our current project within a week or two, depending on the working pace of each class. After these introductory projects are complete, I believe we are going to move on to projects based around the Color Wheel. Thanks again for all of the support, and for reading the website! -Miss Westphal I wanted to update everyone with what the elementary students have been up to in Art class :) 6th grade - Zentangle hand designs. These drawings are completed with sharpie markers. The project is a good test of patience, craftsmanship and attention to detail. 3rd, 4th & 5th grade - Stained Glass Windows. These aren't actually windows, but the window name is given for the vibrant colors that will be used via oil pastels. In each pane of the window, students are asked to draw images that represent their interests/personality. Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd - Serapes! Students are focusing on simple line design, straight, wavy, zig-zag, broken, dotted, etc. They use these lines to draw Mexican blankets, known as Serapes. We will be adding watercolor paint, crayon and construction paper fringing to them over the next few weeks. The young fours had their first art class today. We started with really basic lines, and are learning how to act in the art room. I can't wait to post their final products! The classroom is finally starting to look like an Art Room! Take a peek! More pictures to come next week, along with some examples of completed student work :) -Miss Westphal The elementary students have been AMAZING this week. I am so thankful for my new position with North Central schools. You should all be proud of your students, and I hope they keep their good behavior up! Just so you know, I am keeping track of how classes behave in my class with a little competition. Each day, students have the possibility to earn points. The class period starts with a 10 point base each day. After that, the points can fluctuate down or up based on their behavior and cooperation. For example, if students began to talk out of turn, I may walk up to the board, and erase the 10 and change it to a 9. If they improve, I may walk back up later, and change it back to a 10. At the end of the trimester, I will crown a winner, based on their total score through the weeks. The winning class receives an Art Party during one of their art classes!! The party will consists of games, treats, and maybe a short movie, depending on time. It will definitely be worth winning :) In addition, I will make a display either in my room, or somewhere in the school in their honor. Good luck to all the elementary classes, and keep up the good work! So far, the following points were earned -Miss Westphal |
