I cannot believe that our third week of school is already over! Due to my rotating schedule, I have only see classes once or twice so far at the elementary. Our first mission in all classes was to create sketchbooks, learn new routines, and get accustomed to the art room. Now that we're into a routine, I'm moving onto collaborative projects. The K-2nd grade students (lower elementary) will be creating a mixed media mural similar to the image below. I was incredibly inspired by fellow art teacher Cassie Stephens, but plan to make my own twist of her original design. 1st and 2nd grade students will all be creating the flower designs first. Some classes started their backgrounds to their flowers this past week. We talked about colors that are near each other on the color wheel and mix well when we are painting. In their next class, they will be adding designs ON TOP of their painted layer with construction paper crayons and oil pastels. The first days of painting can be seen below. Click to enlarge.
The upper elementary (3rd-6th) will also be creating a collaborative piece. This concept was inspired by Libs Elliot as well as fellow art teacher Mrs. Nguyen. More details to come soon, as they will be starting this next week! Check out some sneak peeks pictures below. These are inspirational pictures - ours will turn out a little differently. Can't wait! Check out what we are up to at the High School building HERE.

Since last year, I have wanted to paint the back wall of my elementary room to give the room more color. This weekend I have worked on a concept and am excited to get it painted in the next couple of weeks. The general concept can be seen in the simple word document I used to visualize what I see in my mind. It will be a gradient through the color wheel, with a jet and text banner behind it. I can't wait to see the difference! After painting my high school room, I have been incredibly inspired to see that same difference in my elementary room.
I haven't had a chance to post my "classroom tour" photos yet, because frankly, I am not ready to! I have a few more little projects that I'd like to complete prior to doing that... so check back for the big reveal! I do want to post about what we have been up to in the elementary room since school started though. I am going through my rotation of classes (9 of them!), seeing one per day for an hour. This has been our agenda for their first day in Art:
Examples of Kindergarten Self-Portraits above, and sketchbook creation below.
My next big goal is to paint the back wall of my classroom. I was incredibly inspired by the bottom portion of this classroom photo I found via Instagram! Check back to see my interpretation of it! What is next for the elementary students?
After all classes create sketchbooks and their Day 1 Self-Portraits I'll move on to our annual Collaborative Project to start the year! Check out what we've done in the past HERE. |
