After completed their MANDALAS inspired by BALANCE, 8th graders have moved on to the next Principle of Art - EMPHASIS. Emphasis is the focus/main idea of an art work, or what catches the viewers eye. We also discussed contrast, how it can create emphasis, and juxtaposition. Juxtaposition can be seen clearly in work by Rene' Magritte. Juxtaposition is when two items are placed near each other with contrasting effect. Rene' Magritte is known for this concept, which can be seen in his artwork examples below. Magritte was a Belgian artist who was famous for creating surrealist images that were very thought-provoking and made viewers question their perception of reality. Click the images below to enlarge. Art 8 students were asked to create their own interpretation of either The Son of Man or The False Mirror to show their understanding of emphasis and juxtaposition. Next week, students will focus on UNITY & VARIETY
by learning about Gustav Klimt and The Tree of Life. The post on the start of this project can be found HERE. Click on the images below to enlarge works in progress. Final projects can be viewed below!

We watched a short YouTube clip and painted along step-by-step as a group. Students practiced the following techniques: flat wash, gradated wash, wet on wet, dry brush, two color wash and a layering technique. Watercolor paint will be added to the side portions of their final project. Click on the images below to enlarge. This assignment was used to learn the 6 elements of art and use them in a work of art. Below are my examples for the later stages of the project. Click on the images below to view |

Final Vote Here!
The Art 7 class spent this week creating an absolutely adorable holiday project. First, they made the background using tempera paint. Some chose to paint with a brush, others with a sponge... and color combinations were the students' choice. Next, patterned pages (like the ones seen left) were made with sharpie markers. These pages would later be used to make buildings and all structures of their village with scissors and glue sticks. Students then spent a few days assembling their village together. The last step was adding snow via splatter painting and voila! |
