  • On November 11th, HYC students introduced a project to all classes that ends FRIDAY that coincides with World Kindness Day on November 13th! Virtual and Face-to-Face students will be able to participate. We're calling this the RAKS Project (Random Acts of Kindness).

  • Students were asked to perform a Random Act of Kindness before Friday and document it using the colored paper. Student's name goes in the JET area and a drawing/description of the act completed goes in the bubble! The more creative the better.

  • Random Acts can be anything from holding the door for someone, doing something for your family without being asked, sending a card, paying for someone's meal... there are ENDLESS options.
Picture
  • Students in school must turn in their completed paper by FRIDAY to Miss Westphal.
  • All of the submissions will be photographed and compiled into a video slideshow to hopefully inspire others to pass kindness along as well. This video will be posted online and shared with the JETS community.

Online students can create a digital submission.

Online students can also create their own submission and turn in via email.
  • Lastly, three winners will be chosen from all of the entries - one for the best act of kindness completed, one for the most artistic paper, and one completely at random.
  • There will be a prize for the winners, but we want to keep that a surprise as that should not be the main focus. The idea is to do something GOOD just to do it!
  • We can't wait to see what you can do!

The project was introduced by HYC members Katrina, Jaden, Sam, Luke and Katelyn.

HYC Members with EJ
Last week, North Central was lucky enough to have a guest speaker for our 9th - 12th grade students: EJ Carrion! This event was sponsored by the Healthy Youth Coalition and was grant funded. Shout out to everyone who made this possible - it was a great experience for everyone involved. EJ spoke on finding motivation for your future, taking risks, and not being afraid to "make the jump" through sharing his own experiences.

You can learn more about EJ's message from his website here. His book, Accelerate Your Success: How to Create A Future and Stand Out When College is Not Enough is available on amazon.

EJ had many great "takeaways" that really
resonated with our student body, for example:
"It's not about your smart, it's about your heart."
"It's not about your IQ, it's about your I WILL."

After listening to the presentation on Friday, February 28th, HYC was required to have a follow-up activity through the grant. On Tuesday, March 3rd, all high school seminar classes participated in this activity. Students were shown this Google Slide Presentation to initiate discussion and prompt the Index Card Art. See images below to view the results!

In addition, my VISUAL ARTS class had the challenge of making inspiration posters inspired by EJ's speech. The results can be viewed below, click to enlarge.

As I started making a few posts about HYC on the "High School" page of this website, I realized I should have made a separate page for HYC from the get-go! Now, weeks into advising the organization, here we are. From now on, all updates for Healthy Youth Coalition at North Central can be found here. The first two posts I made that are HYC related can be found by clicking the links below!
