My Drawing/Painting class completed a Modern Art unit covering 8 different artists.
Working in groups of 3-4, they completed grid enlargement paintings.
The artists studied were:
At the end of the unit, a short Art History Test was taken, and the overall grade was around an 85%!
We are now completing a Contemporary Art unit covering -
Josef Albers, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol.
This week is our first without the Seniors... :/ But we are going strong. Some classes are working on a fun new project - packaging tape sculptures! Check out famous public artist's Mark Jenkins website!
My 3rd Hour class is working on Art History Mini-Golf holes. I don't want to give too much away... but check out the photo previews!
This week we finally put together our whole Grid Inlargement of American Gothic (the origanal artist is Grant wood.) Also this week we started to do our Cut-Out Posters project, we did this by looking up a famous peice of artwork and redrawing it on a big sheet of paper. Then we had to cut out the face of the peice of artwork so someone can place your head through the hole. To end our week we had to do an Inchies assignment which are, designing a little peice of wood how ever you would like but it has to have your name on it.
This past weekend, of my favorite shows Saturday Night Live, had a famous painting as the subject of one of their sketches! I thought it was very ironic because we literally learned about American Gothic THIS past week in 2nd hour.
2nd hour students recreated this painting in their Grid Enlargement project (see previous post) originally painted by Grant Wood. The sketch featured Kenan Thompson, Jason Sudeikis, and host Anne Hathaway. The plot of this American Gothic skit was mocking the pose of the two characters in Grant Wood's painting.
I definitely got a good laugh out of it. The sketch is currently on Hulu, and I'm sure will soon be a YouTube video. You can view it by clicking on the screen shot picture above. The original painting by Wood is pictured below.
This week we got the assignment to create grid enlargements of the famous painting, American Gothic by Grant Wood. Each of us got a teeny tiny square piece of the painting. We then had to enlarge it onto our picture plane and make sure that they all lined up. It was open medium, so some painted or used other coloring utensils. You also were allowed to paint your square any color you wanted to, some did realistic colors while some did random colors. This assignment was fun and taught us all to work together to create an awesome piece of artwork.
